SUMMARY:UIW School of Physical Therapy - Special Activity for Amputees
DESCRIPTION:During this activity\, we plan to have the UIW physical therapy students practice physical therapy examination techniques with individuals who have had an amputation.  Masks are not required\, but you may wear one if you choose.                                                     \nThere are 48 students in the class\, and they are divided into two groups\, so we will have the same activity twice\, with a break for a late lunch in between sessions.  If you can attend both sessions\, that would be wonderful\, but I completely understand if you are not able to commit to both. \nWe will have the activity on Wednesday\, February 8\, 2023\, from 12:15 pm to 3:15 pm. \n\nFirst session from 12:15 pm to 1:15 pm\nLate lunch between sessions from 1:15 pm to 2:00 pm\nSecond session from 2:15 pm to 3:15 pm\n\nDuring the lab experience there may be a time for you to take a few minutes to share your “story”.  This may be done in a large group or in small group sessions.  Either way\, there will be time for questions from the students and sharing of information throughout the experience.  If you feel comfortable\, you can be prepared to share information about the following:  \n\nInformation about the injury or process that led to you having an amputation\nHow long you were in each healthcare setting (acute care\, inpatient rehab\, outpatient rehab\, etc.\, and the rehab providers that have been involved in your care)\nThe progression of function/ability from time of onset to your present level of function/ability\nHow you coped and your emotional well-being throughout the process (share as you feel comfortable)\nAccessibility of resources (equipment\, etc.) and/or accessibility (including barriers) within the community\, your home\, etc.\nAny other information that you feel that students need to know to be prepared to treat patients in the future.\n\nThe students may perform assessments such as measuring range of motion\, strength\, balance\, activity tolerance\, and assessing gait\, and may ask you to take your prosthesis off.  Please do not hesitate to let the students know if they ask you to do something that you are not comfortable with.   \nThe school is located at the intersection of Guilbeau and Tezel\, in the shopping center behind CVS Pharmacy\, next to Tink a Taco.   \nThe address of the school is:\nUIW School of Physical Therapy (Located in the Saidoff Center)\n9160 Guilbeau Road\nSan Antonio\, TX 78250 \nWhen you arrive at the school\, please enter through the door next to Tink a Taco and the security guard sitting at the front desk will direct you to a seating area where a faculty member will meet you. \nPlease email Amy Crocker at acrocker@uiwtx.edu  or call 210-283-6911 to inform whether you will be able to participate in one or both sessions and lunch.  Also\, please inform if you have any dietary restrictions or food allergies. \nThere will be parking spaces reserved (marked with cones for “patients”) in the small parking area between CVS Pharmacy and the UIW building.  Please let Amy know if you will need a parking space.
