UIW School of Physical Therapy – Special Activity for Amputees

February 8, 2023 @ 12:15 PM - 3:15 PM

During this activity, we plan to have the UIW physical therapy students practice physical therapy examination techniques with individuals who have had an amputation.  Masks are not required, but you may wear one if you choose.

There are 48 students in the class, and they are divided into two groups, so we will have the same activity twice, with a break for a late lunch in between sessions.  If you can attend both sessions, that would be wonderful, but I completely understand if you are not able to commit to both.

We will have the activity on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, from 12:15 pm to 3:15 pm.

  • First session from 12:15 pm to 1:15 pm
  • Late lunch between sessions from 1:15 pm to 2:00 pm
  • Second session from 2:15 pm to 3:15 pm

During the lab experience there may be a time for you to take a few minutes to share your “story”.  This may be done in a large group or in small group sessions.  Either way, there will be time for questions from the students and sharing of information throughout the experience.  If you feel comfortable, you can be prepared to share information about the following:

  1. Information about the injury or process that led to you having an amputation
  2. How long you were in each healthcare setting (acute care, inpatient rehab, outpatient rehab, etc., and the rehab providers that have been involved in your care)
  3. The progression of function/ability from time of onset to your present level of function/ability
  4. How you coped and your emotional well-being throughout the process (share as you feel comfortable)
  5. Accessibility of resources (equipment, etc.) and/or accessibility (including barriers) within the community, your home, etc.
  6. Any other information that you feel that students need to know to be prepared to treat patients in the future.

The students may perform assessments such as measuring range of motion, strength, balance, activity tolerance, and assessing gait, and may ask you to take your prosthesis off.  Please do not hesitate to let the students know if they ask you to do something that you are not comfortable with.

The school is located at the intersection of Guilbeau and Tezel, in the shopping center behind CVS Pharmacy, next to Tink a Taco.

The address of the school is:
UIW School of Physical Therapy (Located in the Saidoff Center)
9160 Guilbeau Road

When you arrive at the school, please enter through the door next to Tink a Taco and the security guard sitting at the front desk will direct you to a seating area where a faculty member will meet you.

Please email Amy Crocker at acrocker@uiwtx.edu  or call 210-283-6911 to inform whether you will be able to participate in one or both sessions and lunch.  Also, please inform if you have any dietary restrictions or food allergies.

There will be parking spaces reserved (marked with cones for “patients”) in the small parking area between CVS Pharmacy and the UIW building.  Please let Amy know if you will need a parking space.
